Girl Talk

I have been so into this guy lately. Greg Gillis, who is better known as Girl Talk makes some of the funkiest music I have heard in a long time. I am not a big fan of the hip hop. But when Girl Talk mixes hip hop music with Sinead O’Connor, Of Montreal, Radiohead and many, many other amazing bands and artists it just becomes so listenable and interesting. He is the ultimate musical matchmaker. I would never think that I could ever enjoy listening to a song with Kelly Clarkson in it, but the way Girl Talk does it, that Kelly Clarkson part is one of my favourites. I have heard that he puts on quite the show too. And I’m not too suprised judging by his plastic coated lap top.

Take a look at this video created by a teacher and his students from my very own Concordia University in Montreal. The whole thing is made from actual concert footage. Really awesome stuff, check it out. And thanks to Yaniv for the tip.

PS: I’d also like to say thank you to Terry for designing an extra special holiday banner for me! You are amazing! Keep it up.

New band alert! Well new to me at least. I was introduced to this band by someone I co-interned with this summer named Gem. She was playing them in the office and I thought it sounded pretty nice. As usual, I forgot about them until I was searching through my Ipod this morning for something new to listen to. I figured I would give these guys a listen. I’m honestly loving this band right now. Perfect music for a sunny summer day. The band is comprised of Sindri, Örn Ingi, Guggý, Inga, Kjartan, Dóri, Sóley. And if you couldn’t guess, they are from Reykjavik, Iceland. Anyways, give them a listen, let me know what you think…

I don’t remember where I heard about them first, but on one of my quests for new music, I came upon this band called Bodies of Water. I can’t believe it took me so long to find out about them. They kind of sound like a mix of the Polyphonic Spree, Tilly and the Wall and the Choir Practice all rolled together into one big ball of goodness. But they really and truly sound like themselves. A really original sounding band. The first song that got me hooked was “These are the Eyes”, which is off of their debut LP, entitled Ears Will Pop & Eyes Will Blink. So that would be a good start if you would like to hear what they sound like. I’m just getting into their second LP, entitled A Certain Feeling, which came out on July 22nd, and I am already loving it. I have a feeling this band might become huge, so if you have a chance to see them now then I suggest you do so. I will post their current tour dates at the bottom. They played Divan Orange, here in Montreal, a few nights ago but I didn’t find out about the show until 3 hours after they were scheduled to play! Huge piss off. Oh well, I’ll have to wait till they come round again.

And now for the samples!

Bodies of Water – These are the Eyes (the song I first fell in love with)

Bodies of Water – Doves Circled The Sky

Bodies of Water – Under the Pines (off of the new album)

And here’s a video that was made for the song “I Heard it Sound”, which is also from the new album:

And click here to check out their recent Daytrotter performance

This band is my new obsession. Any time I have a chance to listen to music (which has been pretty often lately) I have been listening to Pete & the Pirates debut album Little Death. I am absolutely in love with this album. They play pretty simple pop rock music, but the songs just grab me. Each song is really catchy, yet there’s nothing pretencious about them. I love almost every song on the album, but if I had to choose a favourite it would have to be “Eyes Like Tar” or “Bears”. I haven’t been this excited about a band in long time so please check these guys out, you’ll love them!

Here are some samplettes:

Pete & The Pirates – Eyes Like Tar

Pete & The Pirates – She Doesn’t Belong to Me

On a side note, I have returned from my 2 month stint as an intern in New York City. I am now back in my hometown of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Even though I am back at home and I am taking two summer summer courses I will still do my best to update my blog regularly. I will also continue to post my weekly blogs for The Yellow Bird Project, so if there’s nothing new here for a few days be sure to check in there.

Well that’s all for now. Hope everyone is having a good summer filled with music!

Since finding out that the stills are releasing a new album on August 19th, entitled Ocean’s WIll Rise, I have been listening to them a lot. It’s probably been over a year since I’ve listened to them last, but now that I’ve started again it has reminded me of how much I like them. Listening to songs like “Animals + Insects”, “Love and Death”, and my personal favourite, “Retour a Vega”, brings back fond memories. The Stills are back, let’s rejoice!

In case you haven’t seen it, here’s what the album will look like:

And here’s a couple of tracks from the album:

The Stills – Being Here

The Stills – Rooibos/Palm Wine Drinkard

I’m loving them. What do you think?

I used to listen to these guys a lot (i had a weird obsession with “Harmonica Song”), and then i completely forgot about them for a few years and then i read something about a new album and gave it a listen and was a bit surprised, but it’s actually really good! The album is called “Keep Your Eyes Ahead” and i really recommend it.

Here are two samples from the new album:

And they performed live on KEXP not too long ago. You can check out that performance here

I saw Sia at the Sex and the City movie last night! She was with a huge posse of interesting looking characters. Third celebrity sighting of the summer! And in case you haven’t seen it, here is her hilarious video for “The Girl You Lost to Cocaine”:

This a perfect band to kick off your summer with. At times they sound like a modern version of the Beach Boys, at times they sound more like Kings of Convenience or Simon and Garfunkel. The result is just simple fun summer pop. I have a feeling we will be hearing a lot more of this band in the coming months.

Here is the video for their song “London Bridges”:

I can’t stop listening to: “The Richest Kids in Town”

This is Ivy League – The Richest Kids in Town
