YBP Book Launch

Well it’s been quite a hectic week for me, but now that I finally have some time to sit down and relax I’d like to take this time to talk about what an amazing weekend I had last weekend. Yes, as depicted above it was the Montreal date of the Yellow Bird Project Indie Rock Coloring Book launch tour.

In case you haven’t heard about it yet, YBP joined forces with artist Andy J. Miller in creating the Indie Rock Coloring Book, in which each page is devoted to a different indie band or musician and you have to colour it in. Of course all the proceeds of the book sales go to all the charities that the bands support. But instead of telling you about it why not take a look at some samples.

Here is the page devoted to Devendra Banhart:

Here’s the page devoted to Andrew Bird:

You get the picture…

So the tour started in San Fransisco where the project’s two founders Matt and Casey set up shop at the Outside Lands Festival selling YBP T-shirts and coloring books.

Here’s a picture of YBP’s booth:

Afterward they had a party in San Fran where they drank like adults and coloured like children:

The next stop on the tour was in New York City where the YBP crew hosted a book launch party at Housing Works where they had Ra Ra Riot DJing and a solo performance by Elvis Perkins.

Here’s the guys from Ra Ra Riot Spinning tunes:

And here’s Elvis Perkins playing and donning a lovely YBP tee!

And finally, the gang came back to where it all started…Montreal. Fortunately I was able to attend this one and let me tell you it was amazing. As I was pulling up to the Drawn & Quarterly Book Store where the launch was taking place, Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak from the Dears crossed in front of my car. And they were walking with their adorable daughter Neptune, who is responsible for the design on their YBP tee.

There were books, juice, cookies and coloring at this kid-friendly event but the highlight was an amazing solo performance by Murray from the Dears.

Here’s Murray, Natalia and Neptune arriving at the book store (that’s me and White Blank Page standing at the door):

Here’s some of the kiddies colouring:

And here’s Murray doing what he does best:

Hey look who showed up for the festivities…Sam Roberts and his daughter!

Afterward the guys asked me to put on the brand new shirt designed by Little Boots so that they could take some pictures for their site.

Here’s one of them (that’s me trying my best (and failing) to look like a model):

And then to cap it all off they had an after party where everyone could chat, drink and of course colour.

Fun:

So basically it was a really fun weekend! Oh and if you were interested in purchasing the latest Little Boots YBP tee you can find it here.

Well that’s all for now. Are you gearing up for fall and all the wonderful fall music? I am. Can’t wait. I already have made up my fall playlist on my ipod. It’s called “The Minor Fall” and on it you will find stuff from Band of Horses, Midlake, Department of Eagles, Grizzly Bear, Sea Wolf, Nurses and of course Nick Drake. There’s probably more, but yeah…excited for fall.

It turns out the Dears haven’t broken up after all. The core of Murray Lightburn and Natalia Yanchak have kept the spirit of the Dears alive when times were tough. Upon the departure of literally everybody else in the band, the duo recruited a new team of extremely talented musicians, who now make up the new lineup. Who are those talented men and women standing next to Murray and Natalia in the picture above? Let’s find out. First, on the ultimate left we have Jason Kent. If you don’t know who he is you should check out his band called the Crystal Lake. Next we have Yann Geoffrey, who also serves as the bassist of Montreal band Kill The Lights. The two new ladies in the band are Lisa Smith and Laura Wills who are the bassist and keyboardist/singer from another lovely little Montreal band called Pony Up. And rounding out the new lineup is Christopher McCarron who is a part-time member of yet another Montreal band, Land of Talk. Basically what we have hear is a slew of talented musicians coming together to form an all new Dears, led by the same core that started it all. What we are left with…you can find out for yourself by listening to the new album entitled MISSILES, which is out in stores now. Personally, I love it.

Here’s the video for “Money Babies”, from the new album:

This is truly sad news! The beloved Dears are no more. I have been a huge Dears fan for a long time and have salivated at the mouth in anticipation of new music from them. Unfortunately those days are over. According to a message posted on the bands Myspace page by Murray and Natalia, the band is calling it quits after they release their already finished new album, MISSILES. Take a look at that sad sad message:

Meltdown in A Major

This could have been a message saying that The Dears is over.

Instead:

Almost 10 years ago, The Dears made a ghetto little record called “End of A Hollywood Bedtime Story.” We were a four piece back then until two dudes split right after we finished making it, leaving just me and Natalia. I called up a few people and within a month we were resurrected as a six piece. We were brand new, with a new record in hand that the others adopted as their own. We went on to make two more records, a couple of EPs and tour the world many times. Plenty of laughs. We had a couple of exits in that time but the last four years saw the same line up.

I’m not going to lie to you kids: The new Dears album has been completed since April. It is called MISSILES. We have been wandering around the music industry wilderness the whole time, trying to secure a release date for the Fall. It’s getting pretty f***ed out there. We thought very seriously about doing it ourselves. But that just wasn’t realistic at all. Not in the least. And our relationships with Bella Union and Arts & Crafts had run their course. So at the 11th hour, in walked Dangerbird. Our beloved MapleMusic Recordings is still there for us and will release the record in Canada while Dangerbird Records will release it everywhere else. Should be an interesting/entertaining journey.

We want to bring you this record whole and still warm. It’s beautiful; that is the only way to describe it. A blues album, essentially. It’s also long and kind of paced for love making, because that really makes everything better. 58 minutes, 16 seconds, 10 songs. One song is over 11 minutes, just like the old days. Come October, we encourage you to seek it out; it is worth every penny and all the dough just goes back into making more records, not buying solid gold houses. Thanks, in advance.

We had quite an experience making it and by the end, only Natalia and I were left. The band line up as you’ve known has come to a close and now it’s just as it was when we began: Natalia and I, looking after every aspect ourselves. Trust us when we say it is for the best. The music, philosophy — the art has been preserved with fervency. The Dears not are but is. In our mind it always has been that way, the sum of parts to create one vision. Or something like that. Personally, we feel fortunate to have a role in the birthing of every tune, in its arrival from the cosmos.

Anyway, there is a little nugget on our website, one of our faves, a soul-crushing classic: thedears.org

We are moving to organize some live concerts for October with an almost completely new line up, as a seven piece. We’ve been rehearsing a couple times a week. It’s a bit weird, to be honest, looking around at all the new faces. But it’s incredibly exciting to hear the sounds come alive again, and for all the right reasons with all the right intentions. Be excited. It is a new beginning.

Eternal Love,
Murray + Natalia P/K/A THE DEARS

This news has truly saddened me. Montreal is losing one of it’s best indie rock bands. I consider myself lucky to have seen them live at least once and I only hope that Murray and Natalia continue to make music together, because I’m sure whatever they do will be amazing.

Here is a taste of their new album:
